Capture and storage of CO2 (CCS) can reduce today's CO2 emissions in the EU with 50 per cent by 2050. As a prt of a comprehencieve strategy to counter climate change, CCS represents an important step towards building a cleaner energy chain.

The Comissions climate and enegy package of 23 January included a draft directive on "Geological storage of CO2" and the Communication on "supporting early demonstration of sustainable power generation from fossil fuels".

Member states, MEP's, power and petroleum industries, geologists and NGO's, this open hearing will discuss the challenges facing the establishment of CCS demonstration projects by 2015 as well as its wider implementation from 2020 onwards
